Spanish Diocese Publishes Guidelines on Baptizing Children of Same-sex Couples

In February, Bishop Gabriel-Ángel Rodríguez Millán, vicar-general of the diocese of Osma-Soria in Spain, published new guidelines for baptizing the children of same-sex couples, ABC-Spain reported. The guide instructed that couples be treated with “pastoral tact.” The last Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod on the Family, convened in October 2014, contained the directive that children of same-sex couples should be baptized and receive the same treatment as “other children receive,” but its final document stopped short of a strong affirmation of same-sex relationships. Bishop Gerardo Melgar reminded the diocese that “although their moral actions are objectively in conflict with the teachings of the church” the guidelines on baptism “do not try to judge the conscience” of gay and lesbian couples.
