In a CBS 60 Minutes interview aired in November, Cardinal Seán O’Malley of Boston commented on Bishop Robert Finn of Kansas City-St. Joseph, Missouri, the only US bishop to have been convicted of failing to report suspected child abuse. When asked about Finn being allowed to serve as bishop while the church strives for accountability in the clergy sex abuse crisis, O’Malley said, “It’s a question that the Holy See needs to address urgently.” This recognition, he continued, has come “from Pope Francis.”

According to Catholic News Service, the Vatican is working on revisions to canon law related to clergy sexual abuse, including what should be done if a bishop does not take appropriate action on a priest guilty of such a crime.
