Archdiocese Reaches Child Protection Agreement as Cover-up Allegations Continue

Archbishop John Neinstedt of St. Paul and Minneapolis stated in an April 2014 deposition that he had only heard “during the last six months” that archdiocesan priest Rev. Gilbert Gustafson had been convicted for sexual assault, MPR News reported. However, the archdiocese released a report on November 5 that revealed Nienstedt was reminded of the conviction every year from 2009 to 2013, and also refuted the archbishop’s testimony that he was unaware of the sexual assault history of another priest, Rev. Michael Stevens.

In November, an ongoing court case revealed that evidence of child pornography once in a priest’s possession had gone missing from the archdiocese’s vault when the police went to look for it, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Shortly thereafter, Rev. Peter Laird, vicar general for the archdiocese, resigned.
