Poland and The Holy See are at odds over the case of Archbishop Jozef Wesolowski, who was dismissed from his post as papal nuncio to the Dominican Republic in August 2013. Facing an investigation in the Dominican Republic for allegedly sexually abusing teenage boys, Wesolowski was recalled to Vatican City, but the Vatican will not confirm his whereabouts, according to the Associated Press.
Poland has been investigating both Wesolowski and his friend, Fr. Wojciech Gil, also previously living in the Dominican Republic, for allegations related to the sexual abuse of minors. When the office of Przemyslaw Nowak, the provincial prosecutor in Warsaw, contacted the Vatican, the Holy See reportedly stated that as a citizen of Vatican City, Wesolowski would not be extradited, according to an Associated Press article in January. Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi clarified to Catholic World Report that the Vatican did not receive an official request for extradition, and that Poland had merely been informed of Wesolowski’s citizenship status. Lombardi further stated that the archbishop was the subject of investigations in two Vatican tribunals in relation to the sexual abuse allegations.
